Devotees carried the holy book of Sikhs in a golden palanquin during a procession at the Golden Temple, Amritsar to celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak.
Sikhs across the globe celebrate Guru Purab or Guru Nanak Jayanti on Thursday, which commemorates the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism, and the first of ten Sikh gurus. The festival falls each year on Kartik Poornima or full moon day in the month of Kartik or eighth month of the Hindu calendar.
Devotees offer prayers at gurudwaras, or Sikh shrines, and eat special food prepared at the langar or community kitchen. Celebrations start a few days before Guru Purab with early morning processions featuring the “Guru Granth Sahib” or holy book.
